With the 2020 presidential election just days away, Black contemporary artist Nina Chanel and streetwear and sneaker boutique Social Status joined forces for a Converse Chuck Taylor highlighting the 2020 presidential election and Democratic VP Nominee and Senator Kamala Harris.
It is no secret that Senator Kamala Harris doesn’t stick to the typical campaign attire as she often opts for sneakers while traveling and speaking. In fact, she even expressed that her favorite sneakers are Converse’s Chuck Taylors of which she claims she owns several pairs. This collaboration between Nina Chanel and Social Status shows that they definitely did their research as the Chuck Taylor was selected as the shoe of choice inspired by Kamala Harris.
The Social Status x Nina Chanel Converse Chuck Taylor stays true to the shoe’s classic color of white accented by red and blue lines on the midsole. Nina Chanel’s artisty is known for tackling race, gender, and politics through the use of vibrant colors with abstract shapes and designs. With Chuck Taylor’s history in activism, she decided to include custom pins featuring her work to highlight the current cultural and political topics from Black Lives Matter to environmental issues. Pins with “Stop Hate” and “Love 2020” encourage people to spread love and joy despite the difficult year we have experienced. Some pins also highlight Kamala Harris’s interests and the 2020 election with graphics along with phrases like “Vote Vote Vote”, “Save Earth” and “Black Lives Matter”.
To make this collaborative sneaker even better, all pairs of the Social Status x Nina Chanel Converse Chuck Taylor will be donated to students in the Solefood Digestible Sneaker Culture course taught by Dr. Jemayne L. King at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Kamala Harris was also gifted a pair and she was spotted on Complex’s Sneaker Shopping discussing them. She even rocked them a few days ago on Instagram!
